From sprawling urban Tokyo to the rural hamlets of Japan, from record breaking mega girl-bands to underground idols of Akihabara, The Land of Idols offers a journey through one of the most significant creations of Japanese pop culture.
The camera will take time to follow idols in their everyday life adventures: rehearsals, recordings, shootings, concerts, fans meetings... We want the audience to feel like they are right there, next to the idols.
The documentary will alternate interviews (with idols of course, but also producers, managers, fans, former idols, wannabe idols, scholars who wrote books on the subject...) and spontaneously captured scenes. There will be no voice over in the documentary. The content will speak for itself.
The Land of Idols will offer an in-depth look at the phenomenon of idols in Japan but the tone will be kept light and fresh and, most importantly, the documentary will be respectful of the protagonists (no “wacky Japan” approach here).
The Land of Idols team being all based in Japan affords us a longer period of production and to get access to the best content. Most of the shooting will take place from end of June until end of September 2015.
We have the good fortune of an amazing shooting crew working with us. The guys are specialized in music video-related content and they’ve just made a documentary about Southern All Stars, who are one of the most popular bands in Japan for the last 30 years. With them onboard, you can be sure the documentary you’re supporting will look and sound great.
We shot three short videos during the pre-production to introduce you to some of the idols that will be featured in The Land of Idols.
Two more videos will be released during the campaign, so keep checking back !
Aside from Drop, Luchino Fujisaki and Kyueens, other notable idols have agreed to appear in the documentary but have also asked to be named once the crowd funding campaign is over.
So stay tuned for big announcements !
